I am now a journalist, but in a past life I was a medievalist. I found out about Step Up from colleagues/friends at The Moscow Times. I came for a first visit in 2012, came again, and then found myself trying to explain to the kids how an ancient Jew wrote The Bible and why they invented parliaments in Europe.
During half of my lesson, the little terrorists talk about anything apart from history – whether Chernobyl is scary, which New Year salad is the best, or whether I have heard the latest Noize MC song (yes, it’s a good song). But during the other half they listen and really try and understand – this strengthens my belief in humanity.
