HandsOn Workshop

The idea for the HandsOn Workshop appeared when we were preparing for the Heart-to-Heart Market (Dushevny Bazar) in 2012, in which we first sold our fantastic birdhouses. Led by one of our volunteers, Pavel, the students managed to put together little nesting boxes in their free time. It turned out to be an incredibly successful and useful project. All the money received from sales went directly to Step Up.

The success of this cooperative work united a group of students, graduates, volunteers and friends, and in the spring they formed the HandsOn Workshop and started to systematically prepare for craft markets and festivals.

While working on the birdhouses and birdfeeders, our young carpenters are able to turn their fantasies into reality, and so we have ended up with bird houses on chicken legs, ‘hotels’ for birds, libraries, self-assembly kits and, most importantly, Gennady the Starling, without whom not one market or festival now goes by!

Our workshop’s long-awaited debut was on the 5th of May 2013 at a charity market in Krasnaya Presnya Park. We had lots to show off! Anyone who wanted could take part in a master-class and assemble their first bird feeder or nesting box – an activity that was all the more captivating thanks to the energy and dynamism of our carpenters.
